Joomla_jale1I have always been interested in cross-cultural families, where the wife is Azerbaijani and the husband is a foreigner. For some reason, their life and the way women handle this kind of relationship has always captured my attention. To satisfy my curiosity, I decided to interview a professional Azerbaijani woman, Shane’s adorable wife and Tima’s (Tamerlan’s) mom, who lives in Washington, DC. Most of you know her, for the ones who don’t, she is the one bringing youth to dialogue in the Caucasus. She is one of the coordinators of IMAGINE program.

Joomla_sevdaThe best way to know your country and culture better is to look at it from the outside, from different perspectives. We will try to do this from Sevda Ismaiylova’s point of view. Sevda lives in Washington DC and works for the American- Azerbaijani Chamber of Commerce. She was born in Lankaran and visited the US for the first time when she became a finalist of the high school student exchange program (FSA/FLEX).

I have no idea how to cook. Yes, unlike most of the Azerbaijani women in the time-to-get-married-and-have-kids age I can’t even prepare the most primitive meal. Can’t say I’m really proud of it, but at least I made my peace with it. But every time I visit www.azcookbook.com things magically change. Delicious looking meals from Azerbaijan and Beyond provoke in me an immediate need either to cook or to eat.

The first person I thought of, when the Women’s Forum told me about the new column Azeris Abroad, was Mehriban Afandiyeva. You probably wonder why. Well, you know how while being a junior in high school, you always remember the elder classes. People there seem more confident, attractive, smart, and lucky. However, I’m sure you’ll agree that life usually proves these expectations to be wrong. I was no exception.
